NEW YORK, N.Y. - Chad Jones NFL career was cut short, so now the former safety is giving baseball another shot. Jones, a third-round pick of the New York Giants in 2010, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds as a left-handed pitcher in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft Friday. Jones was a two-sport star at LSU and chose football, but never played for the Giants after severely injuring his left leg in a car accident two months after he was drafted by New York. Both his tibia and fibula were shattered, and his arteries and nerves were left exposed. He has been rehabilitating since, but was waived by the Giants in May 2012 after he failed a physical. So, Jones recently turned his attention back to baseball, and apparently impressed the Reds enough in an open tryout for them to draft him. Its the third time Jones, who pitched and played outfield at LSU, has been selected in the baseball draft. The New York Mets found a familiar name during the second day of the draft. Shields (3-6) earned his 90th career win, although it was his first in 11 starts. Shields previous victory came April 30 in an 8-2 win over Tampa Bay. SAN FRANCISCO -- The New York Mets will send ace Noah Syndergaard to the mound on Sunday in an attempt to split their four-game series with the San Francisco Giants.The Giants will counter with 10-game winner Jeff Samardzija in the game that has been picked to be televised nationally by ESPN on Sunday night.The Mets had lost four of five on their trip and were experiencing pitching issues before veteran Bartolo Colon helped turn things around with 6 1/3 strong innings in Saturdays 9-5 win.The Giants had opened the series with 10-7 and 8-1 wins.But that was before Yoenis Cespedes got his power swing working again.After a 15-day stint on the disabled list and a one-hit return on Thursday, the slugger bombed a pair of home runs to highlight Saturdays win.The first of the two home runs went 457 feet, one foot shy of the being the longest hit at AT&T Park this season.He makes such a big difference, Mets manager Terry Collins gushed after Saturdays win.
