Rancagua, Chile (SportsNetwork. Harry Giles Jersey .com) - Mark Gonzalez netted a second-half double on Wednesday as the U.S. mens national team opened its 2015 campaign with a 3-2 defeat against Chile at the Estadio El Teniente. Roberto Gutierrez also found the back of the net for Chile, while Jozy Altidore and Brek Shea scored for the Americans, who last faced Chile in January of 2011 at the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy -- a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. Heading into a new year following a promising showing at the 2014 World Cup in which the Americans reached the round-of-16 before being eliminated by Belgium, these January games represent a chance for manager Jurgen Klinsmann to take a look at some of the lesser-experienced players. Klinsmanns team sheet reflected that as he gave starts to second-year D.C. United defender Steve Birnbaum as well as forward Bobby Wood. The substitute bench also included youngsters Shane ONeill, Wil Trapp, Perry Kitchen and Miguel Ibarra. A new year also meant some experimentation with a new formation as the Americans lined up in a 3-5-2 with Birnbaum, Matt Besler and Jermaine Jones starting in the back. The new-look formation, which places extra defense responsibility on midfield wingers DeAndre Yedlin and Brek Shea, worked early as the U.S. took the lead after just six minutes. Besler threaded the ball perfectly down the left flank for Shea and the Orlando City SC man did well to stick it past Chile goalkeeper Johnny Herrera low to the far post for the opening salvo. But the Chileans responded with an equalizer four minutes later as Gonzalez sent a brilliant cross into the penalty area from the left flank, allowing Gutierrez to nod it past U.S. goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Klinsmanns squad took the lead just past the half-hour mark with some excellent play in tight space as Yedlin got free down the right wing and slid it into space for Mix Diskerud. Diskerud, the newly-minted New York City FC midfielder, cut it back to Altidore, who fired it home for his 26th career international goal. As the second half unfolded, however, the home side seized control and looked to be just a bit quicker to the ball than the Americans. Michael Bradley produced the best chance for the U.S. in the second half when he let one rip from distance on the hour mark that smacked the crossbar and stayed out of the net. With Chile continuing to gain momentum as the second half wore on, the hosts equalized in the 66th minute as Gonzalez was played through the U.S. defense by Marco Medel before firing past Rimando into the bottom right corner for his fifth international strike. The deciding tally came with 15 minutes to play as Gonzalez was quick to react to a rebound on the left side of the box and he smashed it past Rimando to give the hosts the lead. The visitors had one final opportunity in stoppage time as Los Angeles Galaxy youngster Gyasi Zardes let one go from the right side of the penalty area, but it was swallowed up by Herrara and Chile escaped with the victory. The Stars and Stripes will next be in action on February 8 against Panama. Justin Jackson Jersey . Second-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States made lighter work of her day as she beat 2009 champion and Swiss wild card Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-3. The NFL fined Tomlin $100,000 on Wednesday for interfering with Baltimores Jacoby Jones on a kickoff return in the third quarter of a 22-20 loss to the Ravens on Thanksgiving night. http://www.nbakingsonline.com/Authentic-Malachi-Richardson-Kings-Jersey/ . A top pitching prospect, one who the ball club is pinning some of its future hopes, takes the spot of a veteran who once was viewed as a future ace but who, to this point, hasnt realized his potential and may never. DENVER -- Ryan Miller used his head with the game on the line. No, really, his head. Late in the game, the St. Louis goalie craned his neck into the air to block a shot, taking a puck square in the mask. Anything for a win, especially this late in the season. Miller stopped 26 shots, and David Backes broke up a scoreless game in the second period, helping the Blues beat the surging Avalanche 2-1 on Saturday in a Central Division showdown. "Im just trying to fit in," Miller nonchalantly said. "Im not here to save the day or anything." But he has excelled since being acquired from Buffalo last week. He is 4-0 thanks to plays like he made late in the third period with his team ahead by a goal. Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog got loose in front, and while falling to one knee, tried to lift a shot past Miller. But the veteran rose up to thwart the shot. He was just getting warmed up, too, for the division-leading Blues. Miller withstood a furious rally by the Avalanche in the final two minutes after they pulled goalie Semyon Varlamov. "Im here to become part of this club and work my way in, keep good habits," Miller said. "Ive played a long time and think I have a lot to offer. Thats my job right now." The more chaos around Miller, the more he seemed to calm down. That is one of his best attributes, coach Ken Hitchcock said. "His whole disposition calms everybody down," Hitchcock said. "Hes good. Theres a reason hes won so many games." With the Blues up 2-0 early in the third, after Patrik Berglund added a pivotal insurance goal, Miller appeared headed toward his first shutout in nearly two years. But Colorado solved Miller when P.A. Parenteau lifted a shot over him. "Hes been solid back there," Backes said. "Doing everything that world-class goalies do." Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon had his point streak snapped at 13 games. It is the NHLs longest streak by an 18-year-old player. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Avs as their four-game winning streak was haltedd. Anthony Tolliver Jersey. They also lost one of their top offensive players when Paul Stastny went out with a back injury after his opening shift. "That was disappointing, but we didnt hang our heads, we just moved forward," forward Matt Duchene said. "Its a game of inches and they got a little more inches than us." Colorado coach Patrick Roy felt the same way. "Sometimes you arent always rewarded for the way you play and your effort," Roy said. "I thought we had better chances than them. I thought we deserved as much to win, and they did." Berglund gave St. Louis a 2-0 cushion at 3:53 of the final period when he gobbled up the puck down low, spun and lined it over the glove of Varlamov. Moments later, Parenteau beat Miller after receiving a pass from Duchene. That certainly revved up a crowded area, giving the game a playoff feel. "The fans were into this one," Landeskog said. "We left our best out there on the ice." St. Louis made it 1-0 at 7:03 of the second period on a play set up by a long pass from defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk, who has thrived against his former team since he was traded three years ago. Deep in his own end, Shattenkirk sent a pass to T.J. Oshie, who, as he was falling down, slid the puck to Backes. From there, Backes guided the puck past Varlamovs left skate. Shattenkirk has four goals and five assists in 12 games against Colorado. Both teams had a failed power play in the first period and eight shots. Miller had the save of the period when he stopped a point-blank shot from Parenteau with his left shoulder. "Its great to contribute," Miller said. "I wanted to come in and contribute." NOTES: Hitchcock tied Ron Wilson for seventh place on the NHL career wins list with 648. ... The Blues have outscored the Avs 13-5 in taking all three games in the season series. The teams will meet again on April 5 in St. Louis. ... Colorado had 13 of its 27 shots in the final period. ... Roy said of Stastnys injury: "Well know more in the next few days."
