HELSINKI, Finland -- Slovakia defeated the United States 4-1 and the Czech Republic routed Norway 7-0 in group finales for both teams to reach the quarterfinals at the ice hockey world championship on Tuesday. The U.S. had a chance to clinch the group, but will finish second or third, meeting Russia or Finland in a quarterfinal on Thursday. In Stockholm, the other group leader, Switzerland, defeated Belarus 4-1 to achieve its best group record at the worlds, seven wins and no losses. The Swiss hope to win a medal for the first time since 1953, when they were third among three teams. Julian Walker scored twice, and Roman Josi and Mathias Bieber once each. Switzerland won its group, followed by Canada, Sweden and the Czechs. Slovakias Branko Radivojevic was handed a free score after only 15 seconds when U.S. goaltender Ben Bishop turned the puck over, trying to reach a teammate with a pass. Martin Bartek, 3:44 in, and Rene Vydareny made it 3-0 for last years runner-up with Rastislav Stana making only 20 saves. Danny Kristo replied for the U.S. in the second period, and Marko Dano added a late empty-net goal. "We were hopeful and excited about the opportunity to try to finish first. We were not able to do that but we will be ready for the next opponent," U.S. coach Joe Sacco said. "The first two goals were unfortunate, its tough to play catch-up. Slovakia made a good job of bottling up the middle of the ice and they protected the front of the net very well. We had a hard time getting there, and when we did their goalie came up big." The first goal was strange. Bishop went behind the net to pick up the puck and play it to a teammate. He hit the stick of Slovakia forward Tomas Kopecky and the puck went to Branko Radivojevic, who was left with an open net. "The first one bounced right out in the slot from behind the net. The second one I got to but it just squeaked through," Bishop said. "Just unlucky goals. Otherwise I think we played a good game, but the other goalie played well. We could have scored five easily. Its a shame we didnt win." For the Czechs, Tomas Fleischmann showed the way with goals in the second and eight minutes. In a game without great significance, Christian Ehrhoffs second goal was an overtime winner as Germany beat France 3-2. Both teams quarterfinal hopes were dashed by Slovakias earlier victory. OAKLAND, Calif. -- With the NBAs moratorium on free agency set to lift Wednesday, the Golden State Warriors wrapped up most of their major work ahead of schedule. The Warriors added some depth by reaching agreements with guard Toney Douglas and centre Jermaine ONeal on Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because teams cant confirm moves until the new league year begins Wednesday. Both are believed to be one-year contracts. The moves cap a busy and bountiful period for general manager Bob Myers and his staff since free agent talks began July 1. While there will surely be additional roster moves, its unlikely the Warriors will do any more major shuffling this summer. Golden State already has agreements in place to sign Andre Iguodala, Marreese Speights, Douglas and ONeal. The team even announced Tuesday that the Warriors first-round pick, Serbian point guard Nemanja Nedovic, signed his rookie contract. Nedovic had been working on a buyout with his Lithuanian pro team since the Warriors drafted him 30th overall. He will play with the Warriors summer league team Saturday in Las Vegas before returning to Serbia to fulfil his commitments to the national team. The Warriors, which entered free agency with severe salary cap restrictionss, kept finding ways to clear space the past nine days-- and could clear even more through additional sign-and-trade deals with some of those agreements.dddddddddddd. Through free agency or trades, they parted ways with Jarrett Jack, Carl Landry, Brandon Rush, Andris Biedrins, Richard Jefferson, two first-round picks and two second-round picks. The last of those moves, which can be officially announced as soon as Wednesday, should solidify the end of coach Mark Jacksons rotation. Douglas played for the Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings last season, averaging 7.5 points and 2.1 assists in 18.1 minutes per game. The 27-year-old gives Golden State some added backcourt depth to help alleviate the loss of Jack, who agreed to a four-year, $25 million deal with Cleveland. The Warriors are hoping the 34-year-old ONeal can be a reliable backup to Andrew Bogut while Festus Ezeli recovers from right knee surgery, which is expected to sideline him another five to eight months. ONeal showed he might have some NBA life left with Phoenix last year after knee and wrist surgeries had turned the six-time All-Star into a shell of his former self. ONeal averaged 8.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 18.7 minutes with the Suns.
