ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight took a beating last week against Colorado. This week, he spent most of the day standing back and watching his teammates do all the work.DeVeon Smith led an overwhelming ground game with 107 yards rushing and a touchdown and Karan Higdon ran for two scores and No. 4 Michigan routed Penn State 49-10 on Saturday in both teams Big Ten opener. We were looking for a way to be more careful out there so I wasnt getting hit as much as I did last week, Speight said. Luckily, our offensive line and our running backs were great. I think there was one time where we called the same play eight straight times, just flipping the sides, and we were picking up nine or 10 yards a pop. I was just laughing every time I got the same signal.Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) finished with 326 yards rushing and scored six of its seven touchdowns on the ground. Five different backs scored on the ground.I was really impressed by all of our running backs, coach Jim Harbaugh said. We were moving the chains and breaking off big runs. The Nittany Lions (2-2, 0-1) were simply running out of bodies on defense. They came into the game missing three starting linebackers, lost Brandon Smith to a second-quarter targeting penalty then lost Jan Johnson to injury.I dont know if Ive ever been through or seen anything like this, Penn State coach James Franklin said. Weve got three guys out, and then Brandon gets thrown out going for an interception. Then Jan Johnson comes in, and we lose him, too.Penn State was overmatched on the other side of the ball as well. Saquon Barkley rushed for 59 yards and caught five passes for 77 more, but no one stepped up to help. They are just physical on both fronts, Franklin said. The offensive line is big and strong, and their defensive line is more of the same. Plus theyve got one of the most talented secondaries in the country.Jabrill Peppers gave the fans an early thrill by returning Penn States first punt to the 9, although a bench-interference penalty moved the ball to the Nittany Lions 24. Seven plays later, Khalid Hill dove in on 4th-and-goal from the 1.The Wolverines also scored touchdowns on their next two drives. Penn State finally got a couple stops, but the Wolverines took a 28-0 halftime lead on Higdons 2-yard run.The Nittany Lions got on the board with a field goal early in the third, but Chris Evans made it 35-3 with a 3-yard run and the Wolverines cruised to the win.THE TAKEAWAYPENN STATE : The Nittany Lions couldnt compete on either side of the ball. Depth is becoming a serious issue at linebacker, with four players injured, so the defensive staff is going to have to find a new way to stop teams on the ground and on short passes.MICHIGAN : The Wolverines dominated in the trenches, with their defensive line continuously overrunning Penn States offensive line. They registered five sacks while building their first-half lead. Speight, meanwhile, had all the time he needed. I thought we blocked things well, and I thought the defensive line was really good, Harbaugh said. I was very pleased tonight.POLL IMPLICATIONSMICHIGAN: The Wolverines came in at No. 4 and there seems little chance that will change much with No. 1 Alabama winning earlier in the day in a blowout and No. 2 Ohio State on a bye. No. 3 Louisville was at Marshall.ANTHEM PROTESTSeveral players held up a fist on the Michigan sideline during the national anthem.Theres a freedom of expression, and people can speak their mind, said Harbaugh. I can tell you what I believe, but Ive thought about this for a few weeks, and just because Im the football coach, I cant dictate what other people believe. I support them speaking their mind.INJURY REPORTMichigan: WR Jeremy Clark suffered what the Wolverines believe was a torn ACL. This would have been an A-plus-plus-plus day if we werent saddened about Jeremy, Harbaugh said.UP NEXTPENN STATE: Returns to Happy Valley for the first of three straight home games. The Nittany Lions face Minnesota next Saturday in the Golden Gophers first trip to Penn State since 2009.MICHIGAN: Plays its fifth straight game at the Big House, but will have a tougher test against Wisconsin. The 11th-ranked Badgers routed No. 8 Michigan State 30-6 in East Lansing. Madison Bowey Jersey . The 19-year-old Olsen played 34 games with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL this season. In that time, hes recorded 17 goals and 17 assists with 36 penalty minutes. Christian Djoos Jersey ., and Rudi Swiegers of Kipling, Sask., took sixth spot on Saturday in pairs at the NHK Trophy ISU Grand Prix figure skating competition. http://www.capitalsauthority.com/ . - Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is not a fan of his teams use of the wildcat formation, saying "it makes you look like a high school offence. Dale Hunter Jersey .In my heart and mind Im competing for India, luge competitor Shiva Keshavan told The Associated Press in an email interview. Every day Im flooded with messages from Indians all over the world telling me they are supporting me. Brooks Orpik Jersey . Inter president Erick Thohir says in a club statement on Wednesday that Vidic is "one of the worlds best defenders and his qualities, international pedigree, and charisma will be an asset. MINNEAPOLIS -- The WNBA announced its top 20 players in the leagues first 20 seasons earlier this season, and several of them were on hand for Game 1 of the WNBA Finals at Target Center on Sunday. If anybody knows what it takes to win a WNBA championship, its this group. Here are some of their thoughts on the Minnesota vs. Los Angeles series.Sue Bird: I dont think its as simple as saying, This team is better inside, or This team has a better bench. At the end of the day, that stuff wont matter. Its who comes to play, and even more, who makes plays when things break down. It sounds so cliché, but its who makes the hustle plays, who goes out there and wants it more. The thing about Minnesota: They scout the crap out of you. They try to blow up your plays. If they know the ball is supposed to go from X to Y to Z, they try to take out Y, make you do something different. So if youre L.A., they can do something different ... almost like a pickup game. I think you can have success against Minnesota that way.The flip side is Minnesota is extremely deep. They have an amazing starting five, and when they sub, theres no drop-off. Not every team can say that. L.A. hasnt gone as deep in the bench lately as they were early, and that could add up, especially if its a five-game series.Tamika Catchings: For L.A., you know Nneka [Ogwumike] is going to do her thing. KT [Kristi Toliver] needs to hit shots, Candace [Parker] needs to do what she does. Then everybody else needs to follow in behind. And, of course, Minny (laughs) ... they always come at you. Even if one or two players are down, others will rise to the occasion. Like this year, I kind of felt like Natasha Howard has done a great job for them coming off the bench. Its going to be a tough matchup, but a great series.Cynthia Cooper-Dyke: Sometimes the Sparks have had issues with lulls in their offensive game -- like when a team has gone to a zone. Los Angeles is going to have to be consistent, because Minnesota can score. I love the fact that both teams play great defense. I think each game will be very close, and its going to end up being about possessions.Becky Hammon: The thing with Minnesota is just the experience; theyve been there before, they know each other so well. You need to be playing your best basketball at the right time. I know L.A. was a terror at the beginning of the season, and then they kind of hit a wall. And its really hard to beat a team here in Minnesota. I think Minnesota will win, but it would be rreally great for the league, too, if L.ddddddddddddA. wins. The fact that theyre back in the Finals is huge.Lisa Leslie: This is great for the franchise and what L.A. stands for. I think theyve always had the desire, but its about returning to a culture thats about winning. This is where we belong. Now the chips can fall where they may. To get here is also a major milestone.I think for L.A., its important to not just settle for the outside game, but attack inside. L.A. cant afford to be streaky from the outside. And recognize that Rebekkah Brunson is the X factor inside for Minnesota. Shes one of the last old-school players; her box scores will never tell all that she does out there. She is able to defend and keep other players off the boards. The Lynx are going to do what they do; they have so many weapons. Maya [Moore] will do what she does. Seimone [Augustus] could get hot. Its going to be interesting to see if foul trouble is key, because of how tough the inside play will be.Ticha Penicheiro: The Sparks are trying to bring a championship back to L.A., which hasnt happened in a long time, and Minnesota is trying to create a dynasty. You have two well-coached teams and players who are hungry on both sides; Minnesota has managed to stay hungry despite winning three championships. While L.A. feels like they have something to prove. Candace [Parker] -- shes been chasing this championship for a while.I think its going to be great; I hope it goes to five games. This is what we wanted, this is why the league changed the [playoff] format. They were the best teams during the regular season, and I really hope its going to be competitive and well-played.Tina Thompson: I think defensively, the Sparks are going to have to come to play. Minnesota, no matter who theyre facing, theyre very, very hard to stop. Its like a firestorm that gets bigger and bigger. There are some key players for L.A. that everyone knows. But Alana Beard is kind of an X factor in this series, in the sense that shes so great defensively. She has a history of offensive success, too, but because there are so many offensive weapons on the Sparks, her game as a whole has been hidden a little bit. But when shes on a roll and making shots, that could definitely make a difference. Im going to look for Alana to have a really good series. And if she does, they have a good chance.
