The Chicago Cubs ... ahem, the world champion Chicago Cubs return as the favorites to win the World Series again in 2017.The best team doesnt always win the World Series, of course, but in 2016, it did. And while it did involve a few sizable investments in the roster to get there, it was more the culmination of a long rebuild, in which short-term fixes were generally eschewed and the objective was to contend for five years, six years or even longer.Chicago does have a few losses coming this offseason, and the Cubs will never go into a season with the mean projection being 103 wins, but heres the bottom line: The 2017 organization stands just as strong as the 2016 one. Were he to leave, impending free agent Dexter Fowler would be the teams biggest loss this offseason -- Aroldis Chapman is better but was part of the team for only a third of the season -- but Fowler was considered a short-term addition anyway. The Cubs seemed perfectly happy playing Jason Heyward in center field before the opportunity to bring back Fowler fell into their laps.The Cubs also get a full-season return of Kyle Schwarber, the left-handed bat they were missing to go along with Anthony Rizzos in 2016. And its way too early to call the Heyward contract doomed. He was terrible this year, but hes not old and has had better seasons in the past. With Heywards glove, he doesnt have to be an offensive superstar to be a valuable player; if he just gets back to the 110 OPS+ range, which is still likely, hell be a plus to the 2017 team as the Cubs try to repeat.Unusual for a high-payroll team winning the World Series is that even with the loss of players to the Yankees in the Chapman trade, the Cubs still retain a strong farm system. This gives the organization flexibility in the coming years and means that the holes that pop up for the franchise this offseason are simpler to fix, either from within or by trading prospects for a more experienced solution.The Cubs were at the top of our Future Power Rankings this year, and after doing what no other Cubs team in living memory has done, theyre certainly not going to drop as a result!With that, we take a look at the preliminary ZiPS projections for the 2017 season. No one outside of Jim Harbaughs family and coaching staff had more face time with the Michigan head coach during his first year on the job than Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Turnley.Turnleys nearly four decades as a professional photographer have sent him all over the world. He has heard bullets zip by his head in war zones on three different continents. He visited Cuba with Muhammad Ali. He lived briefly with the Dalai Lama. He sat at Nelson Mandelas dinner table the night after the South African leader was released from prison. And now, hes firmly entrenched with the Wolverine football team and Americas most interesting college coach.Harbaugh granted Turnley, who spent two weeks as a walk-on football player at Michigan in the 1970s, unfettered access to himself and his program. He was intrigued after learning about Turnleys bona fides and the competitive relationship he has with his twin brother, Peter. The Turnleys finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the 1988 World Press Picture of the Year contest -- the photographing worlds version of winning the Super Bowl. David won.Turnley and Harbaugh co-authored a 300-page book titled Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind, released by Foster Park Publishing in August, filled with a treatise from the coach and more than 300 photos from Harbaughs first year at Michigan. Turnley made more than 70,000 pictures during his first year with the team. He and Harbaugh recently took the time to talk to us about some of their favorites.Turnley: He has what I call the stars in the eyes. This is a man whose energy is unbelievably contagious.Its not easy to describe. Ive seen it with Ali. Ive seen it with Mandela, and certainly with Coach Harbaugh. They always look you in the eye, very direct. Everything about Jim Harbaughs presence is compelling. When he walks into the room he inspires with his presence. People talk about that with generals, I think he more than anyone Ive ever met has that quality. When he walks in a room he assumes the position of leadership. You can literally see the highlight in the eye. Its twinkling out of the eyeballs, theres so much energy.Harbaugh: This was early in training camp, and wee had one of those kind of practices.ddddddddddddI remember that distinctly like it was yesterday. And its just one of these: Were not going to win a game. Well be lucky if we win one game.(Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno) was saying the same thing. We couldnt get stuff picked up, protected. I just might jump off.Turnley traveled with Harbaugh to several satellite camps in June. He said the coach always had his cleats on for their flights. He compared the brief 10-minute naps Harbaugh took in the air to the type of rest that soldiers would get during the lull of a battle.Turnley: Theres a lot of spirituality on a football field. ...?Jake Butt?is special. Hes a tremendous athlete, tremendous leader. Hes an inspiring guy. Hes reading the Bible in the locker room before getting ready to take the field.Turnley: Its a real privilege to witness the coaches come together at halftime to confer and figured out what theyre trying to tweak. Its a really intense, clear and impressive thing. You feel like youre amidst army generals in a war zone, to be honest.Turnley: This is Dan Dierdorf, one of the all-time great Michigan linemen, talking early in Coach Harbaughs first training camp. They were talking about the direction he was trying to take the team and it was a really thoughtful conversation.Turnley: One of the things that happens being at Michigan is Michigan falls get so beautiful. The skies get big and there are these incredible cumulus clouds, and the light in the afternoon when we go to practice around 3 or 4 is just majestic. I love that.Harbaugh visited France with his wife, Sarah, in the summer of 2015. Turnley, who was in Paris to teach a course, went with the couple to visit the beaches of Normandy, home of the D-Day invasion. Turnley said he saw Sarah jump on Jims back, and it reminded him of images he has seen of men carrying injured soldiers over the same hills in 1944.
